The Pittsburgh Wedding Tipping Guide 2027

2027 Pittsburgh Wedding Tipping Guide

How much should you tip?

If you search for this, you are likely to find many opinions on the correct tipping etiquette for a wedding. Most query searches will return percentages similar to those you would use in a restaurant.

While we believe in tipping our servers in restaurants, you would hardly tip the manager or owner unless they did something extraordinary. Here lies the dilemma with the wedding tipping culture.

Let’s explore that.

Ask yourself this: Am I tipping the person or a percentage?

Tipping any invoice total for catering, bar, or entertainment could easily become a very large and unexpected number. But where is that money going, and is it allocated entirely to those who are working your wedding day?

Some working your wedding will be on their feet working up to 12 hours, and others pop in for an hour to deliver a cake or decor. How do couples reconcile this in a way that shows appreciation for all? What's fair to both the front-line workers and the couples?

If a cake is $900, and 20% = $180? Is that fair for a few hours of time to deliver it?

The catering bill is $15,000, and 20% is $ 3,000, for a team of 6 workers who worked 6 hours. That is $500 per person; is that fair or extreme?

Owner-operated DJ service is $3000; 20% = $600. Is that fair for a person who already allocated their price in their package?

Ask yourself the question: who am I tipping, an invoice or a person?

Current national guidance already acknowledges that business owners and employees can be treated differently, and Zola specifically notes that reviews/referrals can be valuable alternatives to cash gratuities. (zola.com)

The 2027 Pittsburgh Wedding Tipping Guide suggests:

Tip the person, not a percentage.

🟢 FRONT LINE — Recognize the Person

They're spending hours directly taking care of you, your family, and your guests.

  • Up to ~6 hours → $50/person
  • 6–12 hours → $50–$100/person
  • 12+ hours / exceptional service → $100+

🟡 SERVICE TEAM — Recognize the Labor

They're delivering, setting up, tearing down, carrying, cleaning up, or transforming the space, but may have little direct interaction with guests.

  • Consider $20–$50/person, depending on time and workload.

🔵 OWNER + FRONT LINE — Recognize Both

This is the important middle category. Your photographer, planner, DJ, or content creator may own the company but also personally work 8–12 hours on your wedding day.

They set their own prices, so cash gratuity shouldn't be an obligation. However, if their personal service was exceptional, $50–$100+ is a meaningful gesture. For an even bigger tip, leave them a 5-star Google review, upload photos, tag them, and refer them! This tip pays over and over again!

⚫ OWNER-OPERATED — Grow Their Business

For owners primarily providing a contracted product or professional service, skip calculating a percentage of their invoice.

Do a Google Review + Referral + Social Tag! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A well-worded Google review pays them over and over again!

Stop tipping the contract. Start recognizing the person.

Our POV is simple: tipping is about showing grace and appreciation—not calculating a percentage of a contract. A handwritten thank-you card with an amount that fits your budget acknowledges the people who personally cared for you, your family, and your guests. Get a headcount of your wedding-day team, prepare and color-code envelopes by gratuity amount, and recognize the people who made your day special. In our opinion, this wedding tipping guide is a meaningful way to show appreciation and can save you thousands compared with percentage-based tipping.
