9 Questions Every Bride Should Ask Before Hiring a Makeup Artist

Why Should You Hire a Professional Makeup Artist?

Your best friend may be great at doing makeup — but hiring a professional makeup artist for your wedding day means having someone who understands how to create a flawless look for photography, knows how to work with all skin types, and can troubleshoot any unexpected issues with confidence. A pro also removes any awkwardness around asking for changes or giving feedback. You can feel totally comfortable asking for tweaks without worrying about hurt feelings — which isn’t always easy with a friend or family member.

Why Do Certain Makeup Artists Command Significantly Higher Prices Than Others?

It’s easy to wonder why one artist charges $200 while another charges $600. The difference usually comes down to experience, the products they use, their professionalism, and how many weddings they’ve done. Think about it this way: you’re not just paying for makeup. You’re paying for someone who arrives on time, communicates clearly, brings a well-stocked, clean kit, and knows how to create a look that lasts — even under pressure.

The Choice Is Beyond Beauty For Sure.

Of course you want someone who does beautiful work — but personality matters too. This person is going to be with you during some of the most intimate parts of your wedding day, like when you’re getting ready with your bridal party. You want someone who puts you at ease, brings good energy, and understands how to calm nerves. Choose an artist whose vibe makes you feel supported and confident.

Why Travels Fees?

Travel fees can feel confusing, but they aren’t just about gas money. Most makeup artists pack heavy kits and arrive early, sometimes hours before your first look. Travel fees often cover time spent packing, driving, unloading, setting up, and even the lost time they could be using for other appointments. This is especially true if your location is outside the main city or involves extra logistics.

Will My Makeup Artist Provide a Touch-Up Kit?

Not all makeup artists include touch-up kits automatically, so it’s always a good idea to ask. Some may include blotting papers or a mini lip gloss, while others might offer full-sized products for an added fee. If you want something specific — like a sample of your lipstick or a mini setting spray — just request it ahead of time. Most pros are happy to accommodate you with a little notice.

How Should I Approach Telling My Makeup Artist If I Don’t Like Something?

Every artist wants you to love your look. If you’re not 100% happy, speak up! A quick fix can make a huge difference, and we don’t take it personally. If it’s easier, bring a trusted friend who can gently speak up on your behalf during your trial. The goal is always for you to feel amazing.

Who Should I NOT Bring To My Wedding Makeup Trial?

Your trial should be about your vision. Avoid bringing anyone who’s overly critical, pushes their preferences onto you, or makes you second-guess your gut.

Instead, bring someone who knows your style, supports your choices, and helps you feel confident — not confused.

I Like All Styles! What Should I Show My Makeup Artist?

Loving lots of styles is great, but it helps to narrow things down. Bring inspiration photos that match your own hair color, skin tone, and facial features — that way, we can create a version that truly works for you.

Keep in mind that many Pinterest and Instagram photos are heavily filtered or retouched. We’ll get you as close to that vibe as possible, but our goal is a real-life version that looks amazing in person and on camera.

What Do You Love Most About Being a Makeup Artist?

It’s tough to narrow down my favorite part of my job! I’m obsessed with beauty trends as a hobby, and I feel so fortunate to do what I love and still make a living from it.

I enjoy traveling to different places every weekend. Each time I apply makeup on someone, I learn something new, especially how to use products because each person’s face is unique.

I cherish the fact that I get to be a part of some of the most heartwarming and joyous moments in people’s lives. I’ve laughed, cried, and everything in between with my brides.

Working with bridal parties has given me new friends from all over. I always come home from weddings feeling incredibly grateful. Doing what I love every single day genuinely makes me a happy person.
